Tonganoxie has an excellent public school system. The Tonganoxie Elementary School, Junior High School and High School have a student/teacher ratio of approximately 20:1. There is also a private Christian school that serves grades K-5.
  
Area colleges and universities include the University of Kansas - Lawrence and Edwards Campus, St. Mary College, Baker University and several community colleges.
  
Tonganoxie is served by Leavenworth County Emergency Medical Service, and is licensed as an Advanced Life Support service. EKGs, drug therapy and other advanced life support techniques are available. Two advanced cardiac life support facilities are within 20 minutes. There are 2 trauma centers within 40 minutes by ambulance or 15 minutes by one of the 3 helicopter ambulance services. There are a total of 10 hospitals within 30 minutes of Tonganoxie.

The Leavenworth County Fair takes place every August. It features competitions in homemaking, farm animals, arts and crafts and 4-H events. There's also a carnival, dances, rodeos, demolition derbies and other events. The annual Tonganoxie Days, the second Saturday of June, features a barbecue contest, 10K library run, street dance and lots of arts and crafts booths. Of historic interest is the Honey Valley Schoolhouse, a restored 1-room school on the Gordon Harmon farm south of Tonganoxie.
  
The Reno Methodist Church was moved to its present site in 1994. The original building was built in 1891 but burned in 1918 and restored the same year. It was used as a location in Michael Landon's film "Where Pigeons Go to Die," which was filmed in 1989. The church is now a popular setting for weddings and church services.
